5th grade measurement word problems worksheets
Fifth grade conversions get heavier: bigger numbers, both directions, and answers that land in mixed units, like 272 minutes coming back as 4 hr 32 min. Some teachers call these story problems, and at this grade the conversion table has to run both ways.

How to teach this
Fifth grade answers often land in mixed units: 272 minutes becomes 4 hr 32 min, a division with a remainder. Have your child write the conversion fact first, then the arithmetic under it. Ask for an estimate up front (about 4 hours?) so a misplaced zero stands out. Units belong at every step of the work, not just on the answer line.
Watch for: Kids write a bare number with no unit, and 7 could be inches, centimeters, or anything. Ask '7 what?' every time until the unit shows up on its own. Kids read the number at the end of the ruler even when the object starts at a nonzero mark. Ask how far it traveled, not where it stopped, and subtract the start from the end. Kids convert in the wrong direction, turning 2 meters into 20 centimeters. Smaller units mean more of them: going to a smaller unit multiplies (2 m is 200 cm), going to a bigger one divides.
Common questions about measurement word problems
- What makes the fifth grade problems harder?
- Both directions, and mixed units in the answers. A 272 minute event has to come back as 4 hr 32 min, which takes a division and a remainder, not just a lookup.
- How does the answer key handle multi-step problems?
- It shows the whole path: the conversion fact first, then the arithmetic under it. If your child missed a problem, the path shows whether the fact or the arithmetic went wrong.
