5th grade fraction word problems worksheets

Fraction word problems for grade 5 open up to four story types: adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (5.NF.A.2), multiplying a fraction by a fraction, like a garden that covers 1/3 of a field with herbs in 1/4 of it (5.NF.B.4), dividing with unit fractions (5.NF.B.7), and the familiar fraction of a number when the sets get big, like 5/6 of 48. Answers can be fractions or mixed numbers now, like 1 1/12 hours of practice.

The kind of problems you'll get

Read each story. Show your reasoning and include the unit in each answer.

  1. Jamal 's playlist has 6 songs. 1/2 of them are piano pieces. How many piano pieces are on the playlist?

    Answer: 3

  2. A trail crew surveyed 1/2 mile in the morning and 1/2 mile after lunch. How many miles did the crew survey altogether?

    Answer: 1

  3. The fabric sample's length in yards is 2, and one pattern unit has a length of 1/3. How many pattern-unit lengths equal the sample?

    Answer: 6

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

With four story types on one sheet, the sorting question comes first: combining pieces, taking a part of a part, splitting with a unit fraction, or taking a fraction of a set? For unlike denominators, the first written step should be renaming both fractions, and for fraction-of-a-number keep the narration: 48 divided by 6 is 8, times 5 is 40. A size check closes every problem: 5/6 of the apples should be most of them, and a part of a part must be smaller than both parts.

Watch for: Kids add the bottoms along with the tops, turning 3/8 + 2/8 into 5/16. The bottom number names the size of the pieces, and same-size pieces keep their name; only the count changes. Kids divide by the top in fraction-of problems, starting 5/6 of 48 with 48 ÷ 5. The bottom says how many equal parts to cut, so divide by it first. Kids stop after the dividing step, so 5/6 of 48 comes back as 8. That's one sixth. The top says to take five of those parts: 8 × 5 = 40.

Common questions about fraction word problems

How is fifth grade different from fourth?
Fourth grade keeps denominators alike; fifth grade drops that guardrail. Stories now add and subtract unlike denominators, multiply a fraction by a fraction, and divide with unit fractions, alongside fraction-of-a-number with bigger sets, covering the 5.NF cluster.
Do the answers come out to whole numbers?
Fraction-of-a-number stories still land on whole numbers, but the rest answer in fractions and mixed numbers, like 1 1/12 or 1/15, always in simplest form. The answer key shows the answer for every problem.
