Percent means out of 100. To find a percent of a number, turn the percent into hundredths and multiply, or find 10% first and build from there.

5th grade
Grade 5 percent word problems ask one question in many costumes: what is this percent of that number? Seats reserved, laps finished, cans that turned out to be aluminum. Percent at this grade is an early introduction that many curricula and most workbooks include; the formal standard arrives in grade 6.

6th grade Core grade
Grade 6 varies the unknown across percent relationships. A story may ask for the part, the whole, or the percent in contexts such as surveys, collections, auditorium capacity, and trail restoration. Every relation is exact, keeping the setup in front of the arithmetic.
