How to teach this
Before any computing, ask what the answer should be close to. If ribbon costs about 4 dollars and about 3 dollars, the total is near 7, so an answer of 71.5 means the decimal point slipped. Estimating first turns the decimal point into something your child checks instead of hopes about.
Watch for: Kids line up the right-hand ends of the numbers instead of the decimal points, so 4.35 + 2.8 becomes 4.35 + 0.28. The decimal point is the anchor; ones sit under ones. Kids expect multiplying to make the number bigger. With decimals under 1 it shrinks: 0.3 × 0.2 is 0.06, six hundredths, because you're taking a part of a part. Kids drop the zero that holds a place, writing 0.6 as 6 or reading 0.06 as 0.6. Say the value out loud in tenths and hundredths before writing it down.
Common questions about decimal word problems
- Which decimal skills do the fifth grade stories use?
- All four operations, in story form: adding and subtracting amounts with up to two decimal places, multiplying a decimal by a whole number, and dividing a decimal total into equal groups. Five problems per sheet, each with room to show work and an answer line.
- Do the answers come out even?
- They land on clean tenths or hundredths, never repeating decimals. The point of the sheet is choosing the right operation and placing the decimal point, not wrestling long division that never ends.
