How to teach this

Have your child narrate both steps: "18 divided by 3 is 6, times 2 is 12." Writing the one-part value above the fraction keeps the middle step from vanishing. If an answer comes out bigger than the starting number, the steps got swapped. Redo it, division first.

Watch for: Kids divide by the top number instead of the bottom. The denominator says how many equal parts to cut, so divide by it first. Kids stop after the dividing step: 18 ÷ 3 only finds one third, and 2/3 needs that result multiplied by 2.

Common questions about fraction of a number

Is 'of' really the same as multiplying?
Yes, that's the fifth grade insight, from 5.NF.B.4. 2/3 of 18 and 2/3 × 18 are the same computation, and these sheets make that connection routine.
Where does this skill show up later?
Everywhere proportions live: percents, discounts, map scales, probability. Finding a fraction of a number is the template all of those reuse.
