4th grade fraction word problems worksheets
Fraction word problems for fourth grade run three story types: adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and finding a fraction of a set, like 3/4 of 20 stickers. Answers can simplify, like 5/10 becoming 1/2, and a sum can pass one whole, like 1 1/6, per 4.NF.B.3 and 4.NF.B.4.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Start each problem with one sorting question: are same-size pieces being put together, or is the story taking a fraction of a group? The first kind keeps its denominator; the second kind starts with division. A quick bar drawn in the work space settles most arguments: eight equal pieces, shade three, shade two more.
Watch for: Kids add the bottoms along with the tops, turning 3/8 + 2/8 into 5/16. The bottom number names the size of the pieces, and same-size pieces keep their name; only the count changes. Kids divide by the top in fraction-of problems, starting 5/6 of 48 with 48 ÷ 5. The bottom says how many equal parts to cut, so divide by it first. Kids stop after the dividing step, so 5/6 of 48 comes back as 8. That's one sixth. The top says to take five of those parts: 8 × 5 = 40.
Common questions about fraction word problems
- What kinds of fraction problems are on the fourth grade sheet?
- Three kinds, mixed: adding or subtracting fractions with the same denominator, a whole number times a fraction, and finding a fraction of a set. Five problems per sheet, each with room to show work and an answer line.
- Will the denominators ever be different?
- Not at this grade. Unlike denominators need equivalent fractions, which is fifth grade work. Here every add-or-subtract story uses same-size pieces, so the thinking stays on the story, not on renaming fractions.
