  1. 4th grade Core grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Fraction word problems for fourth grade run three story types: adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and finding a fraction of a set, like 3/4 of 20 stickers. Answers can simplify, like 5/10 becoming 1/2, and a sum can pass one whole, like 1 1/6, per 4.NF.B.3 and 4.NF.B.4.

  2. 5th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Fraction word problems for grade 5 open up to four story types: adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (5.NF.A.2), multiplying a fraction by a fraction, like a garden that covers 1/3 of a field with herbs in 1/4 of it (5.NF.B.4), dividing with unit fractions (5.NF.B.7), and the familiar fraction of a number when the sets get big, like 5/6 of 48. Answers can be fractions or mixed numbers now, like 1 1/12 hours of practice.

  3. 6th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Grade 6 division goes fraction by fraction, per 6.NS.A.1: a 3/4-meter ribbon cut into 1/8-meter pieces, a jug of paint poured into fractional pots. The question counts how many unit lengths fit, and the answer can come out mixed, like 2 1/2 scoops, when the last unit only partly fits.
