1st grade Core grade
Addition word problems for grade 1 tell one small story in two or three sentences: two groups join, or one group grows, and your child finds the total. The types teachers call add to and put together both appear, including change unknown, where the missing number sits in the middle of the story. Numbers stay within 20 (1.OA.A.1).

2nd grade
Second grade addition word problems move to two-digit numbers, so regrouping shows up inside a story for the first time. Problems stay one step (2.OA.A.1, 2.NBT.B.5): your child names the two parts, writes the equation, and carries a ten when the ones pass nine. Some teachers and textbooks say story problems. Same page, same skill.
