Third grade division word problems come in two flavors that look different but use the same fact: sharing, where 24 stickers are split among 4 friends, and grouping, where 24 stickers go into bags of 4. Facts divide evenly at this grade (3.OA.A.3), so every quotient comes out whole.

In fourth grade the leftovers arrive. Division word problems bring remainders (4.OA.A.3) and one-digit long division (4.NBT.B.6), and the story decides what the remainder means. Some call these story problems, and the name fits here: 58 kids in vans of 9 gives a different answer than 58 pencils in boxes of 9.

  3. 5th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Word problems for grade 5 divide by two-digit divisors (5.NBT.B.6): 288 juice boxes in cases of 24, 375 miles spread over 15 days. The reasoning is familiar by now. The long division is longer, and interpreting the remainder in context stays part of nearly every answer.

  4. 6th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Grade 6 pushes the dividends into the thousands while the divisors stay two-digit, per 6.NS.B.2: 2,320 letters into mailbags of 16, 1,548 parts into kits of 14. Every story asks for the full groups and what's left over, so the answer has two parts and both matter.
