Root words and word building worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Words are built from parts. The root carries the meaning: play. Prefixes and suffixes snap on: re + play = replay, play + er = player.

Three grades, one set of sentences: all three print from the same 40. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Second graders build words from parts, writing the assembled word: un + lock, help + ful, teach + er. Every build shows the root surviving inside its new word.

Third graders build with the full starter set of prefixes and suffixes, and can take words apart in the other direction: finding play inside replayed.

  3. 4th grade

Fourth graders build and unbuild longer words, connecting this page to the suffix families and number prefixes elsewhere in the word-study ladder.
