Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of sentences you'll fix

Put the parts together and write the whole word.

  1. fear + less =

    Fixed: fearless

  2. help + ful =
  3. care + ful =

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 7 to a page. 2nd to 4th grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 3rd grade sheets print 8 to a page.

Some of the words:

rematchmisspelldisagreedislikerefreezeteacherrainysaltykindnessquickly

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Read each build aloud as an equation with meanings: re plus play equals play-AGAIN. Saying the meaning of the part while writing the word welds them together.

Watch for: The root never disappears: it is inside the built word, still meaning what it meant. Kids who can find the root inside 'unlocked' own the whole word. Each part has one job: re- means again, un- means not, -er means one who, -ful means full of. Learning the parts once unlocks hundreds of words.

Common questions about 2nd grade root words and word building

What is a root word?
The base that carries the meaning: play in replay, lock in unlock. Prefixes and suffixes attach to it, and the standard (L.2.4.c) asks kids to use the root as their clue.
Why write the built word instead of choosing it?
Assembly is the skill: writing replay from re + play is word-building for real, and the spelling comes along free.
