Suffixes -tion and -sion worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

-tion and -sion both turn actions into things: act becomes action, decide becomes decision. -tion usually says shun. -sion says shun in mission but zhun in vision. The base word picks the spelling.

Three grades, two different sets of words: 5th and 6th grade share one. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Fourth graders sort words by their ending, -tion (action, station) or -sion (mission, vision), hear that -sion can say shun or zhun, and meet the suffix's job: turning actions into things.

  2. 5th grade

Fifth graders predict the spelling from the base word: t-enders take -tion, the -de/-se/-ss families take -sion, and the pairs (divide/division) become automatic.

  3. 6th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Sixth graders spell the family fluently in real writing, where -tion words carry much of the academic vocabulary of every subject.
