The kind of sentences you'll fix

Put the parts together and write the whole word.

  1. re + play =

    Fixed: replay

  2. use + less =
  3. help + ful =

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 3rd grade sheet

3rd grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 8 to a page. 2nd to 4th grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 2nd grade sheets print 7 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Reverse the machine: give a built word (unpacked) and ask for the root and its parts. Disassembly proves the assembly was understood, and kids love running machines backward.

Watch for: The root never disappears: it is inside the built word, still meaning what it meant. Kids who can find the root inside 'unlocked' own the whole word. Each part has one job: re- means again, un- means not, -er means one who, -ful means full of. Learning the parts once unlocks hundreds of words.

Common questions about 3rd grade root words and word building

What parts should kids know first?
The workhorses: re-, un-, dis-, mis-, pre- among prefixes; -er, -ful, -less, -ly, -ness, -y among suffixes. This page drills exactly that set.
How does this help reading big words?
A reader who spots roots reads unhelpfulness as un-help-ful-ness, four familiar pieces, instead of thirteen letters of trouble.
