The kind of sentences you'll fix

Put the parts together and write the whole word.

  1. pre + heat =

    Fixed: preheat

  2. luck + y =
  3. re + read =

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 4th grade sheet

4th grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 8 to a page. 2nd to 4th grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Send your child hunting for one root's whole family: help, helper, helpful, helpless, helping, unhelpful. A six-word family from one root is morphology's whole sales pitch in one list.

Watch for: The root never disappears: it is inside the built word, still meaning what it meant. Kids who can find the root inside 'unlocked' own the whole word. Each part has one job: re- means again, un- means not, -er means one who, -ful means full of. Learning the parts once unlocks hundreds of words.

Common questions about 4th grade root words and word building

How does this connect to the suffix pages?
This is the foundation: parts snap onto roots. The -tion and -able pages are the same machine with fancier parts, and Greek and Latin roots follow after.
What shows mastery?
Inventing legal words for fun (refrogging the pond) and being able to say why they work. Playful assembly means the system is truly owned.
