Suffixes -ance and -ence worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

-ance and -ence both turn ideas into nouns and both say the same unsure sound: distance, silence. The schwa hides the vowel, so the eye must learn each family.

Three grades, one set of words: all three print from the same 20. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

    Examples and teaching notes

Fourth graders sort -ance and -ence nouns by family, meeting the endings' shared job (turning ideas into nouns) and their identical sound, which makes the spelling a matter of sight.

    Examples and teaching notes

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Fifth graders sort quickly and use the relative trick: if they can spell the -ant or -ent cousin (important, confident), the noun keeps the same vowel.

  3. 6th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Sixth graders spell the family in real writing, where difference, experience, and performance appear weekly and the hidden vowel costs points quietly.
