How to teach this
Have your child place the decimal point in the answer space before computing anything. It turns the most common error into a step that can't be skipped. When problems get copied onto scratch paper, watch the alignment: the point is the anchor, not the last digit. Estimate first on a few: 34.28 + 15.96 should land near 50, which catches a misplaced point instantly.
Watch for: Kids line up the last digits instead of the decimal points, so tenths land under hundredths. Stack by the point, and every place finds its column. Kids finish the arithmetic and forget the point, writing 5024 for 34.28 + 15.96. Bring the decimal point down into the answer before writing a single digit.
Common questions about add & subtract decimals
- Are the problems already lined up, or does my child stack them?
- They print stacked with the decimal points aligned, so the practice is the arithmetic and the regrouping. Copying and aligning a few from scratch on paper is worth doing too.
- How many decimal places do the numbers use?
- Both numbers in a problem share the same count, tenths with tenths, hundredths with hundredths, so the columns match up cleanly. Every print generates a fresh set.
