How to teach this

Watch the ones column: when it totals ten or more, the carry gets written above the tens before anything else happens. If your child forgets the carry or adds it twice, slow to one problem at a time with every step said aloud. Base-ten blocks help if carrying still feels like a magic trick.

Watch for: Kids add the tens first because we read left to right. Start at the ones so the carry has somewhere to go. Kids write 12 under the line when the ones make twelve. Write the 2 and carry the 1 ten.

Why does my child add the tens first?
Left to right feels natural because that's how we read. Have them touch the ones column first on every problem. The habit sets in fast.
Should the carry be written down or done mentally?
Written, at this stage. Marking the carry above the line catches most mistakes before they happen.
