Second graders add two, three, or four two-digit numbers. Most problems on these sheets require regrouping, so your child keeps every addend lined up by place, writes each carry, and adds column by column.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

The sample sheet above has 12 problems. Its answers run from 49 to 244. On the 1st grade sample they run from 29 to 98. This sheet is aligned to 2.NBT.B.6, 2.NBT.B.7. The 1st grade sheet is aligned to 1.NBT.C.4.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Add the entire ones column first. When it totals ten or more, write the ones digit and carry the remaining tens before moving left. With three or four addends, pause after each column to check that every number was included. Base-ten blocks help if regrouping still feels abstract.

Watch for: Kids add the tens first because we read left to right. Start at the ones so the carry has somewhere to go. Kids write 12 under the line when the ones make twelve. Write the 2 and carry the 1 ten.

Why does my child add the tens first?
Left to right feels natural because that's how we read. Have them touch the ones column first on every problem. The habit sets in fast.
Should the carry be written down or done mentally?
Written, at this stage. Marking the carry above the line catches most mistakes before they happen.
