The kind of problems you'll get

Solve each problem.

  1. 1 + 0 =

    Answer: 1

  2. 4 + 1 =

    Answer: 5

  3. 6 + 1 =

    Answer: 7

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

The sample sheet above has 25 problems. Its answers run from 1 to 25. On the 1st grade sample they run from 3 to 30. This sheet is aligned to 2.OA.B.2. The 1st grade sheet is aligned to 1.OA.C.6.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Set a minute, then let your child finish the rest untimed. Track two numbers: how many were done in the minute and how many were right. Accuracy first, then speed. Facts still slow after a few rounds (usually 7 + 8, 6 + 9, 8 + 5) get their own practice.

Watch for: Kids count on their fingers for every fact, which is fine for learning but too slow for a timed grid. Recall, not counting, is the goal. Kids rush and write the answer to the previous problem in the next box. One box at a time, finger on the problem.

Common questions about 2nd grade addition mad minute

How many problems are on a sheet?
Thirty, in rows. A new mix every print, so the sheet cannot be memorised in order.
What is a good score?
Thirty right in a minute is fluent. Most second graders start well below that; the point is the trend, not the first number.
