How to teach this
Check the setup before the math: are the ones sitting over the ones? Turning lined paper sideways keeps columns honest. Have your child touch each column as they add and say both little sums out loud.
Watch for: Kids add the tens first because we read left to right. Start at the ones so the carry has somewhere to go. Kids write 12 under the line when the ones make twelve. Write the 2 and carry the 1 ten.
Common questions about two-digit addition
- Does the 1st grade version include carrying?
- No. The 1st grade sheets are regrouping-free, so your child can focus on lining up ones and tens.
- How is this different from fact practice?
- Fact sheets build recall of single-digit sums. These sheets put that recall to work inside the column method used for years to come.
