First graders add two-digit numbers without regrouping: ones with ones, tens with tens. Keeping the columns straight is the whole game at this stage, and the stacked layout makes it visible.
2nd grade Core grade

Second graders add two, three, or four two-digit numbers. Most problems on these sheets require regrouping, so your child keeps every addend lined up by place, writes each carry, and adds column by column.
