How to teach this

Ask your child to prove each answer by totaling both sides aloud. For a blank, total the finished side first, then ask what the other side needs to match it. Give false equations a second look together: what one change would make this true?

Watch for: Kids read the equal sign as 'the answer comes next.' It means both sides are the same amount. Kids fill the blank in 4 + 3 = ___ + 2 with 7. The blank needs 5, because both sides must total 7.
