How to teach this
Say the two steps out loud for the first few problems: 'write the five, carry the one'. Have your child mark the carry above the tens column before touching the tens. If the idea of trading ten ones for a ten still feels abstract, build the first problem with base-ten blocks and swap ten unit cubes for a rod.
Watch for: Kids write the whole 15 under the ones column. Only the 5 stays; the 1 moves up as a ten. Kids forget the carried 1 when the next column also adds up neatly. Touch the carry before adding the column.
Common questions about 2nd grade addition with regrouping
- Does every problem on this sheet need regrouping?
- Yes. That is what makes this page different from the two-digit addition page, where about one problem in four adds up without a carry.
- Is 'carrying' the same as 'regrouping'?
- Same move, two names. Schools now say regrouping because you are trading ten ones for one ten; older books say carrying.
