3rd grade addition with regrouping worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

Third graders add three-digit numbers where the ones, the tens, or both make ten or more. Every problem regroups at least once, so your child practises carrying into the tens and the hundreds instead of hoping the columns stay small.

How to teach this

Ask which columns will regroup before adding: a quick look at the ones and tens digits tells you. Then add right to left, writing every carry. A double carry (ones into tens, tens into hundreds) is the one to watch; it is where a rushed child drops a 1.

Watch for: Kids write the whole 15 under the ones column. Only the 5 stays; the 1 moves up as a ten. Kids forget the carried 1 when the next column also adds up neatly. Touch the carry before adding the column.

Common questions about 3rd grade addition with regrouping

Will problems carry into the hundreds?
Some will. The sheet mixes problems that regroup once with problems that regroup in both the ones and the tens.
Should my child estimate first?
It helps. Rounding both numbers to the nearest hundred gives a target, and a wrong carry usually misses it by a hundred.
