How to teach this

Speed comes from rhythm: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, each column the same move. Check answers by estimating first (5,000 + 3,000 is about 8,000), so a misplaced carry that gives 71,000 gets caught. Ask your child to circle every carry mark after finishing as a self-check.

Watch for: Kids write the whole 15 under the ones column. Only the 5 stays; the 1 moves up as a ten. Kids forget the carried 1 when the next column also adds up neatly. Touch the carry before adding the column.
