1st grade
Money word problems for first grade tell one short story per problem, and the coins are printed right inside it at their real sizes. Your child reads the story, counts the coins on from the biggest value, and writes the total in cents. Totals stay under a dollar.

2nd grade Core grade
Second grade money word problems do two jobs. Coin-total stories still print the coins in the problem, and making-change stories ask for the change from $1, like a snack that costs 63¢. That's the money work 2.MD.C.8 asks for: solve word problems with quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

3rd grade
Word problems for grade 3 move into dollars and cents: a book costs $2.35, someone pays with $5.00, and your child finds the change. The coin pictures are gone now. Some teachers call these story problems, and this is the grade where they start to look like real shopping.
