A literary device is a tool a writer uses on purpose. Alliteration, assonance and onomatopoeia play with sound. Hyperbole makes things bigger than the truth and understatement makes them smaller. Personification, oxymoron and allusion make you see something in a new way.

A literary device is a technique a writer uses to shape how a line sounds or what it makes a reader picture. This sheet covers eight that eighth grade reading keeps coming back to: alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, hyperbole, personification, allusion and understatement. Each line uses one of them, and the student writes its name.
