A simile compares with like or as, a metaphor says one thing is another, personification gives a thing a human action, hyperbole stretches the truth, an idiom is a saying with its own meaning, onomatopoeia is a sound word, and alliteration repeats a first sound.

3rd grade
Third grade figurative language worksheets mix five figures of speech on one page: simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia and alliteration. Each line of writing uses one of them. Your child reads the line, looks at the three names in parentheses, and writes the one that fits. A second sheet prints the same lines as a circle-the-letter test.

Fifth grade figurative language worksheets put seven figures of speech on one page: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiom, onomatopoeia and alliteration. Each line uses one of them. Your child reads the line and writes the name of the figure, picking from three names in parentheses. A second sheet has the same lines as a circle-the-letter test.

6th grade
Sixth grade figurative language worksheets mix seven figures of speech: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiom, onomatopoeia and alliteration. The lines are longer than in fifth grade. Ideas act like people, metaphors are often implied instead of stated with is, and the idioms are ones sixth graders meet in novels. Students write the name of the figure each line uses.
