An allusion is a brief reference to a story, a person, a myth, or an event that the writer expects the reader to recognize. Calling a job Herculean borrows the strength of a Greek hero in one word. Seventh graders work out what an allusion means from the sentence around it.

An allusion is a short reference to a story, person or event the writer expects you to know. Eighth grade allusions reach further than seventh grade ones, into Greek myth, Bible stories, fables, classic novels and American history. Students read each allusion in a sentence and write what it means there.
