Long vs. short vowels worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

A short vowel is quick: bed, fish. A long vowel says its own name: seed, kite. Sort by what the vowel SAYS, not how the word looks.

Two grades, one set of words: both print from the same 36. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Print by grade

First graders sort words by whether the vowel is short (bed, duck) or long, saying its own name (rain, cube). The mix includes vowel teams and silent e words, so the sort is by sound, the way real reading works.

  2. 2nd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Second graders sort quickly and can name WHY each long vowel is long: a silent e, a vowel team, or an open syllable. The sort becomes a review of every long-vowel spelling at once.
