1st grade long vs. short vowels worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet.

First graders sort words by whether the vowel is short (bed, duck) or long, saying its own name (rain, cube). The mix includes vowel teams and silent e words, so the sort is by sound, the way real reading works.

The kind of words you'll sort

Write each word from the bank in the correct column.

Columns: short vowel and long vowel. "desk" belongs under short vowel; "snow" belongs under long vowel.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 36 words, 10 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 36 words. What changes is the standard (RF.1.2.a here) and the teaching notes below. 2nd grade sheets print 14 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child say each word aloud and stretch the vowel: is it quick or does it say its name? Ears first, letters second. If they stall, say both versions (cap, cape) and let them pick what they heard.

Watch for: Long does not mean the word has more letters. 'Stamp' is five letters and short; 'tie' is three and long. Only the vowel's sound decides. Say it aloud. This sort cannot be done with the eyes alone at first, and moving lips are a good sign, not cheating.

Common questions about 1st grade long vs. short vowels

What is the difference between long and short vowels?
A long vowel says the letter's own name: the a in rain, the i in kite. A short vowel is the quick sound in cat, bed, and fish. Hearing the difference is a first grade cornerstone.
Why are there five-letter words in the short column?
Length of word and length of vowel have nothing to do with each other, and the sheet makes that point on purpose: stamp is short, tie is long.
