Silent e (magic e) worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Silent e says nothing itself, but it reaches back one letter and makes the vowel say its name: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite.

Two grades, one set of words: both print from the same 40. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Silent e (the famous magic e) turns short vowels long: can/cane, kit/kite, hop/hope. First graders sort short-vowel words from their silent e partners and hear the vowel change with their own ears.

  2. 2nd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Second graders read and sort CVCe words automatically and use the pattern in spelling: adding e to flip a vowel, and noticing when a word needs one. The sheet's minimal pairs make the rule impossible to miss.
