Middle sounds are the vowel in the middle of a short word, the sound new readers guess at: cat, cot and cut differ only there. Each picture on this sheet is a short-vowel word with its middle letter missing, and the child says the word slowly and writes the vowel they hear.

1st grade
First graders hear the short vowel in the middle of a word and write it. This sheet blanks exactly that letter, mixes all five short vowels across the page, and draws a fresh set of pictures each print, so the child listens to the middle of every word instead of pattern-matching.
