The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank in the correct column.
snowrainmaskshellcrabsockglobeboat
Columns: short vowel and long vowel. "crab" belongs under short vowel; "globe" belongs under long vowel.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 2nd grade sheet
2nd grade sheets draw from 36 words, 14 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 36 words. What changes is the standard (RF.2.3.a here) and the teaching notes below. 1st grade sheets print 10 to a page.
Some of the words:

- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 14 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Add a why round after sorting: for each long-vowel word, find the letters doing the lengthening: the e at the end, the team in the middle. Naming the mechanism turns sorting into spelling power.
Watch for: Long does not mean the word has more letters. 'Stamp' is five letters and short; 'tie' is three and long. Only the vowel's sound decides. Say it aloud. This sort cannot be done with the eyes alone at first, and moving lips are a good sign, not cheating.
Common questions about 2nd grade long vs. short vowels
- How does this connect to spelling?
- Every long vowel needs a spelling reason: a silent e, a vowel team, or an open syllable. Sorting by sound first sets up those spelling patterns to make sense.
- What if my child sorts by guessing?
- Ask them to say the word aloud before placing it. This sort is an ear task wearing a paper costume, and reading aloud is the whole method.
