How to teach this

Each sixth grade passage builds a central idea from research, so have your student name the claim and the study that supports it. Ask what the scientists measured and what they still don't know; several passages say so plainly. Then ask why the author chose a particular detail, such as a number or a comparison. Sixth grade reading standards ask students to explain what a detail adds.

Watch for: Answering from what you already know or have heard about the animal instead of what the passage says. Some passages correct a popular idea on purpose. Mixing up two facts that sit close together in the passage. Read the question again for the word that says which one it wants.

Common questions about 6th grade animal reading comprehension

What makes a 6th grade animal passage harder?
The passages explain research as well as facts: how scientists measured a shark's age or tracked a bird's flight, and what they are still unsure of. Questions ask for the central idea, the best evidence and the purpose of a detail.
Can these support a research project?
Yes, as models. Each passage shows how a good source states a claim, gives the evidence and admits what is unknown. Students can use the same shape when they write up their own animal research.
