How to teach this
Animal passages tempt children to answer from memory, so make the proving sentence the rule: no circle until they can point to the line. Each passage explains its special words, such as molt or nectar, in the same sentence or the next one. When your child asks what a word means, send them back to that sentence first. Then talk about how the animal's body helps it live where it lives.
Watch for: Answering from what you already know or have heard about the animal instead of what the passage says. Some passages correct a popular idea on purpose. Mixing up two facts that sit close together in the passage. Read the question again for the word that says which one it wants.
Common questions about 2nd grade animal reading comprehension
- Are these real animal facts or stories?
- Real facts. Every passage is nonfiction about a real animal, and the questions ask only for what the passage says. Story comprehension with animal characters is a different skill, on the fiction reading pages.
- Which animals are in the second grade passages?
- Animals with one clear, surprising survival trick: the axolotl that regrows its legs, the platypus that lays eggs, the panda's extra thumb, the salmon that smells its way home, geese in a V and more.
