How to teach this
Fifth grade passages often describe what happens when one animal changes, such as sea otters disappearing from a coast. Draw the chain together: this animal, then that one, then the plants. The questions reward students who track an effect across paragraphs. Ask, too, how scientists found out, because tracking studies and experiments are part of most passages at this grade.
Watch for: Answering from what you already know or have heard about the animal instead of what the passage says. Some passages correct a popular idea on purpose. Mixing up two facts that sit close together in the passage. Read the question again for the word that says which one it wants.
Common questions about 5th grade animal reading comprehension
- How do these connect to fifth grade science?
- Fifth grade science studies how energy and matter move through an ecosystem. Passages like the sea otters and kelp forests show one food web changing, and the questions ask students to follow the chain from cause to effect.
- How can I help with the harder questions?
- Ask your student which paragraph the question is about, then which sentence there answers it. If two paragraphs are needed, have them find both sentences. Most wrong answers come from reading only one.
