How to teach this
Make it physical once: deal 20 beans into 4 equal piles, and 1/4 of 20 is just one pile. Then say the move as a rule: "of a number means divide by the bottom." If dividing is shaky, keep a multiplication facts sheet nearby, because this skill is only as fast as the facts under it.
Watch for: Kids divide by the top number instead of the bottom. The denominator says how many equal parts to cut, so divide by it first. Kids stop after the dividing step: 18 ÷ 3 only finds one third, and 2/3 needs that result multiplied by 2.
Common questions about fraction of a number
- Why do 4th grade problems mostly use fractions with 1 on top?
- Unit fractions isolate the core move: divide to find one part. Once 1/4 of 20 is automatic, 3/4 of 20 is just one more multiplication.
- Will the division always come out even?
- Yes. Numbers are chosen so every answer is whole. The point here is fraction reasoning, not remainders.
