How to teach this

Say the rule as one breath ("tops times tops, bottoms times bottoms"), then make simplifying the ritual: after every product, ask "can both numbers shrink?" For a child who wants to see why, fold a paper in half, then fold that half into fourths: 3/4 of 1/2 lands on 3/8 of the page.

Watch for: Kids reach for a common denominator because addition needed one. Multiplication never does; that habit turns easy problems into long ones. Kids leave answers unsimplified. 10/18 is correct arithmetic but the key expects 5/9, so the last step is always "can both numbers shrink?"

Common questions about multiply fractions

Do we need a common denominator?
No, that's addition's rule. Multiplication works straight across: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator.
Why does multiplying two fractions make a smaller number?
Because it means "a fraction of a fraction." Half of three fourths has to be smaller than three fourths. The sheets make that feel normal with practice.
