How to teach this

By now the shift should be automatic; the errors move to the carries. Cross out first-line carries before starting the second line. Check with an estimate, and for odd-looking answers redo only the line that looks wrong rather than the whole problem.

Watch for: Kids forget to shift the second line left (or write a zero) and add 258 + 86 instead of 258 + 860. The second line is tens, so it starts one place over. Kids carry from the first line into the second. Each line gets its own carries; cross the old ones out before starting the second line.

What is the next step?
3-digit by 2-digit multiplication, which adds a third column but no new idea.
