5th grade long division worksheets

Fifth grade long division stretches the same bracket method to dividends up to four digits. The steps don't change (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) but longer dividends mean more cycles, more zeros in quotients, and more chances to lose a place.

How to teach this

Use graph paper or turn lined paper sideways so each digit keeps its column; most long division errors at this level are alignment, not arithmetic. When a quotient needs a zero in the middle, don't rescue. Let the check by multiplying back reveal it.

Watch for: Kids skip a spot when the divisor doesn't fit into a digit. Write a zero in the quotient and bring down the next digit instead. Kids leave a remainder that's bigger than the divisor. If the leftover is as big as the divisor, it divides one more time.

Common questions about long division

How is 5th grade long division different from 4th?
Dividends grow to four digits, so each problem takes more divide-multiply-subtract cycles. The method is identical. It's the endurance that's new.
Should my 5th grader still show every step?
Yes. With 4-digit dividends, one skipped subtraction throws off everything after it, and written steps are the only way to find where.
