5th grade character traits worksheets
Fifth grade character traits worksheets give each story a character with a pattern: a boy who rebuilds his cart after every breakdown, a girl who fixes a torn costume with whatever is in reach. Questions ask for the trait word, the action that proves it, and what another character's reaction shows. The trait word never appears in the story.

The Fourth Axle
The Linden Street Derby had one rule that mattered: no motors. Gravity did the work, and the cart did the rest, if it held together. Kofi's cart did not hold together. On the first test run down Mrs. Abara's driveway, the back axle bent like…

What's on a 5th grade sheet
5th grade sheets draw from 15 passages, 295 to 318 words long. 5th and 6th grade print from the same 15 passages. What changes is the standard (RL.5.3 here) and the teaching notes below. None of these passages are on 4th grade sheets. On 4th grade sheets they run 255 to 274 words.
Some of the titles: Five Minutes to Curtain, Biscuit at Four O'Clock, Tuesdays at Willow Court, Sign-Up Day, No Hands, The River Wall.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
When your child picks a trait, ask for two pieces of proof: two moments where the character acted that way, because one loud moment can mislead. Then compare characters. Two cousins at the same creek crossing, one fast and one slow, make each trait easier to see. The fifth grade standard asks for exactly that kind of comparison.
Watch for: Traits and feelings get mixed up constantly. Scared during a storm is a feeling; brave, careful, or curious is who someone keeps being across the whole story. Kids pick the trait that matches ONE loud moment. The right trait fits the character's actions all the way through, and the evidence questions check exactly that.
Common questions about 5th grade character traits
- What character traits should a 5th grader know?
- Words past the basics, like dependable, resourceful, cautious, considerate, stubborn and humble. Fifth graders name the trait, back it with an action from the story, and tell a feeling like nervous apart from a trait like cautious.
- Why are there two questions about the same trait?
- One asks for the word and the next asks for the proof. A child who guesses the word still has to find the action that shows it, so the second answer tells you whether the first one came from the story.
