How to teach this
When your child answers with a feeling word, ask whether the character is like that every day. Sorting feelings from traits is the heart of this level, and one question usually settles it: is this how they felt, or how they are?
Watch for: Traits and feelings get mixed up constantly. Scared during a storm is a feeling; brave, careful, or curious is who someone keeps being across the whole story. Kids pick the trait that matches ONE loud moment. The right trait fits the character's actions all the way through, and the evidence questions check exactly that.
Common questions about 3rd grade character traits
- What is the difference between a trait and a feeling?
- A feeling is weather; a trait is climate. A character can feel scared and still be brave, and third grade questions start telling those apart.
- How do the evidence questions help?
- They stop lucky guessing. A child who picks the right trait must also pick the action that proves it, which means the answer came from the story.
