How to teach this

Ask for a quick estimate first (6,000 − 2,000 is about 4,000), then work right to left. Two or three borrows in one problem is normal here. A child who gets the ones right and the thousands wrong usually skipped reducing a digit after a borrow; circle every crossed-out digit as a check.

Watch for: Kids subtract the smaller digit from the bigger one whichever is on top (8 − 2 instead of 12 − 8). The top number is the one being taken from; the order matters. Kids borrow but forget to reduce the digit they borrowed from. Cross it out and write the new digit every time.

How large are the numbers?
Four-digit minus four-digit. Every problem regroups in at least one column.
Can my child check the answers?
Add the answer to the number that was subtracted; it should give the top number. The answer key is on the second page too.
