The kind of problems you'll get

Break the two-digit number into tens and ones. Multiply each part, then add.

  1. 10 × 2 =

    Answer: 20

  2. 12 × 1 =

    Answer: 12

  3. 60 × 1 =

    Answer: 60

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 3rd grade sheet

The sample sheet above has 9 problems. Its answers run from 12 to 495.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Connect it to what your child knows: 34 × 6 is 30 × 6 plus 4 × 6. Do one problem that way, then show the stacked version doing the same thing in a different order. Keep the carry small and written above the tens digit. Nine problems is enough at this stage.

Watch for: Kids add the carry before multiplying the tens (2 + 3, then × 6) instead of after (6 × 3, then + 2). Multiply first, then add the carry. Kids write the whole 24 under the ones column. Only the 4 stays; the 2 is carried.

Common questions about 3rd grade 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication

Is this on grade level for third grade?
It is a stretch. Third grade owns the facts and multiples of ten; two-digit by one-digit is usually introduced late in the year or in fourth. The page suits a child ready for the next step.
Does every problem carry?
Most do, not all. The fourth-grade version of this page carries on every problem.
