3rd grade multiplication word problems worksheets

Third grade is the home ground of multiplication word problems: equal groups, arrays, and rows and columns, with facts through 12 and easy multiples of 10 (3.OA.A.3). Your child reads two or three sentences, spots the equal groups, and writes a fact like 6 × 8 = 48 to answer.

The kind of problems you'll get

Read each problem. Show your work and write the answer.

  1. The cafeteria sets out 2 trays with 5 cups on each tray. How many cups are set out altogether?

    Answer: 10

  2. Liam sets out 5 boxes of crayons with 9 crayons in each box. How many crayons are there altogether?

    Answer: 45

  3. Alex arranges 5 rows of desks with 7 desks in each row. How many desks does Alex arrange altogether?

    Answer: 35

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Ask two questions about every story: how many groups, and how many in each group. Once those two numbers have names, the fact writes itself. Have your child mark the group size in the story before multiplying. If a fact like 7 × 8 keeps stalling the problem, run fact practice separately rather than abandoning word problems.

Watch for: Kids add instead of multiplying, so 6 rows of 8 cars becomes 14. Have them sketch the rows as dots. Once the picture shows 48, the difference between 'how many groups' and 'how many in all' clicks. In two-digit problems kids multiply the tens and forget the ones, so 6 × 14 comes out as 60. Break the number apart out loud together: six 14s are six tens and six 4s. Kids swap which number is the group size and panic when the story lists them in an odd order. Ask for the two numbers by name, groups and size of each group, before the fact gets written.

Common questions about multiplication word problems

What kind of word problems does 3rd grade multiplication use?
Equal groups and arrays, per 3.OA.A.3: trays of cookies and rows of desks, with facts up to the 12s and some multiples of 10. One step per problem.
Should my child memorize the facts first or start these?
Run both. Word problems give the facts a reason to exist, and a shaky fact showing up in a story tells you exactly which one to drill. The answer key writes out each fact.
