3rd grade division word problems worksheets
Third grade division word problems come in two flavors that look different but use the same fact: sharing, where 24 stickers are split among 4 friends, and grouping, where 24 stickers go into bags of 4. Facts divide evenly at this grade (3.OA.A.3), so every quotient comes out whole.

How to teach this
Keep both meanings of division alive by asking which one each story is: are we sharing into a known number of piles, or filling groups of a known size? Counters make either one visible in a minute. Tie every problem to its multiplication partner. A child who owns 6 × 4 = 24 already owns 24 ÷ 6 and 24 ÷ 4.
Watch for: Kids write the remainder into the answer no matter what the question asks, so the school needs '6 r 4' vans. Ask what the leftover means in the story. Sometimes it rounds the answer up, sometimes it gets dropped, and sometimes it is the answer. Kids treat division as brand-new learning instead of multiplication reversed. Have them check every quotient by multiplying back: if 42 ÷ 7 = 6, then 7 × 6 must rebuild 42. Kids divide the numbers in the order they appear, even when the total comes second in the story. Have them find the total first and say it out loud. The big amount is the thing being split.
