2nd grade
Multiplication word problems for grade 2 are really array and equal groups stories: rows of chairs, or packs of stickers, with small factors like 2s and 5s (2.OA.C.4). Repeated addition is welcome here. These story problems plant the idea that same-size groups can be counted in one move.

Third grade is the home ground of multiplication word problems: equal groups, arrays, and rows and columns, with facts through 12 and easy multiples of 10 (3.OA.A.3). Your child reads two or three sentences, spots the equal groups, and writes a fact like 6 × 8 = 48 to answer.

4th grade
Word problems for grade 4 multiply bigger amounts: a two-digit number times a one-digit number (4.NBT.B.5), so ticket prices and crate counts. The story is still one step. The new work is carrying out multi-digit multiplication in the work space without losing a partial product.

5th grade
Fifth grade multiplication word problems run on full multi-digit numbers (5.NBT.B.5): two-digit times two-digit and beyond, in stories about classroom supplies or fundraiser totals. Recognizing multiplication is quick by now. The sheet keeps the written method sharp and the answer tied to the real quantity the story asked about.
