4th grade multiplication word problems worksheets
Word problems for grade 4 multiply bigger amounts: a two-digit number times a one-digit number (4.NBT.B.5), so ticket prices and crate counts. The story is still one step. The new work is carrying out multi-digit multiplication in the work space without losing a partial product.

How to teach this
The written method earns its keep at this grade, so ask for the full written method there, not answers from memory. Watch that the ones get multiplied too, since a common shortcut multiplies the tens and stops. An estimate first, 6 × 14 is a bit more than 60, gives a cheap check that catches half the slips before they reach the answer line.
Watch for: Kids add instead of multiplying, so 6 rows of 8 cars becomes 14. Have them sketch the rows as dots. Once the picture shows 48, the difference between 'how many groups' and 'how many in all' clicks. In two-digit problems kids multiply the tens and forget the ones, so 6 × 14 comes out as 60. Break the number apart out loud together: six 14s are six tens and six 4s. Kids swap which number is the group size and panic when the story lists them in an odd order. Ask for the two numbers by name, groups and size of each group, before the fact gets written.
Common questions about multiplication word problems
- What changes in 4th grade?
- The numbers. Stories multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number, so the written method matters. There is room under each story for the full calculation.
- Are the answers included?
- On page two. Every sheet prints with its own answer key, showing the solution path such as 6 × 14 = 84, so you can spot where a partial product went missing.
