2nd grade context clues worksheets
A context clue is a hint in the sentence that tells you what a new word means. In second grade the words come from picture books and early chapter books, like soggy and nibble. Your child reads the whole sentence, finds the words that explain the new one, and picks the meaning that fits.

How to teach this
Read the sentence aloud together and stop at the new word. Ask your child to keep going to the end before guessing. Then ask which words helped. On a sentence like "My cereal got soggy after it sat in the milk too long," the answer is that it sat in the milk too long. If your child picks a wrong meaning, put it back into the sentence and read it out loud. A cereal that is dry and crunchy after sitting in milk sounds wrong, and hearing that is how they learn to check.
Watch for: The clue usually comes after the hard word, so keep reading instead of stopping. A meaning that sounds fancy but fights the sentence is wrong; the context outvotes the guess.
Common questions about 2nd grade context clues
- Are context clues too hard for 2nd grade?
- No. Second graders already do this when someone reads to them. They hear a new word and work out what it means from the story. This page asks them to do it on their own with one short sentence at a time.
- What if my child can't read some of the words?
- Read the sentence to them. The skill is using the sentence to work out the meaning, not decoding every word. Let them read the choices on their own if they can.
