2nd grade genres worksheets
Second grade genre worksheets pair each passage with questions that ask what kind of text it is and how you can tell. The passages are the genres themselves: an original fable, a folktale, a fantasy, a realistic story, an information text, each wearing its clues.

How to teach this
Make it a sorting game with two questions: could this really happen, and is it trying to teach true facts? Those two sorts separate most of the genres at this level, and your child can run them on any book in the house.
Watch for: Fiction versus nonfiction is only the first sort. The real skill is the next level down: a myth and a science text can cover the same river, and the difference is how each one explains it. Kids match genres by topic instead of by clues. Space means science fiction to them, even when the text is a fact article about astronauts. The clue questions exist to break that habit.
Common questions about 2nd grade genres
- What genres does my child learn first?
- The big, clearly marked ones: fables, folktales, fantasy, realistic fiction, and information texts. Each passage on these sheets is a genuine example, so the clues are really in there to find.
- Why does it matter what kind of text something is?
- Knowing the kind sets the reader's expectations: whether to look for a lesson, for facts, or for magic. Good readers shift gears by genre without noticing, and this is where that starts.
